At Thuja, our philosophy is simple: we build clothing to last. For a long time, we were hesitant to work with Polartec® Alpha Direct. We had concerns about its long-term durability, and we never want to produce "fast fashion" that ends up in a landfill after a single season of use. We want your gear to be rugged, and a long-term part of your kit.

Then we tested it.

After months of high-output mountain testing, we realized that the performance benefits of this material are just too good to ignore. Originally developed for the U.S. Special Forces to handle the intense stop-and-go nature of combat, Alpha Direct is an active insulation layer that regulates body heat like nothing else on the market. It keeps you warm when you're static but breathes and sheds heat the second you start moving. It’s more durable than we expected. Don’t go bushwacking with it as your outer layer, but if you’re responsible, it will last a long time.

Whether you’re trail running, touring, or pushing for a 30-mile day on the AT, this crewneck provides the ultimate weight-to-warmth ratio.

The Technical Breakdown

We are offering this custom release in two weights, so you can tune your kit to your specific needs:

• Alpha Direct 90: The "do-it-all" ultralight option. Best for high-exertion activities and summer/shoulder season trips where breathability and weight are the top priorities. Still a great winter base layer.
• Alpha Direct 120: A higher loft with more "shag" for increased warmth. Perfect for winter adventures, and chilly summits. It’s never a bad idea to throw this in your pack, just in case.

To help with durability, we’ve added another of our favorite fabrics, Polartec® Power Wool™ from our Hell Brook for thumbhole cuffs. Cuffs are a notoriously high-wear area, so by reinforcing them, we’re hoping to extend the life of your garment without detracting from performance.

A Note on Scarcity: We have exactly one roll of the 90-weight and one roll of the 120-weight. This is a limited, custom run—once we run out of fabric, we won’t be making any more this season.
